Spring Tablescapes

Spring Tablescapes

It’s that time of year in the Colorado Rockies when one is absolutely over the snow and ready for spring. Unfortunately at 10,000 feet, spring sometimes doesn’t really come until June and at that point it usually just turns right into summer! Regardless of what mother nature is doing outside though, I feel the need to bring the spring inside with bright and cheery colors. One of my favorite ways of doing this is with my tablescapes. In fact, I’m pretty sure this will be a blog topic that occurs regularly as we move through the seasons as it’s such a fun and easy way to try something new. I often indulge in one or two new decorative items a season but I really try to use what I have on hand to keep the costs down. Plus I find that it’s part of the fun to get creative with pieces I already have.

To begin I usually start with a table runner of some sort. You can start with a tablecloth base but I typically like to use the natural wood of the table as my first layer and add to that. For spring, this is where I love to add a bold print and or pop of color. As I alluded to a minute ago, layers are key. You can use two runners for added texture or something raised to give your table design more depth. I have a weathered two by that I found that is the perfect size for my dining table and I’ve been using this for the past several seasons! If you don’t have old pieces of wood laying around you can easily create the look by using a vinegar & steel wool based stain on a new piece of lumber as well (future blog topic). Once you have a base in place, you can begin adding the details. I happen to have a few floral arrangements left from Easter that are still hanging in there, but I’m not opposed to using dried flowers either. In fact mixing the two can be quite successful. Candles and other holiday or seasonal items are next. I often keep candles neutral so they can be used throughout the year and change out the base or glass shroud as needed. I tend to lean towards the modern farmhouse vibe so having a combination of wood for warmth along with some simple sleek metals for contrast are key. Dishes and glassware add to the appeal and napkins are another opportunity for more color and texture. The key is to have fun and experiment. I’m always swapping out pieces and mixing and matching throughout the house before I finally settle on just the right look! Happy Spring!
